Two Icelandic filmmakers have been nominated for the Emmy Awards for
their work on an episode of National Geographic's Naked Science series,
called Iceland Volcano Eruption.
Naked Science is a documentary series focused on new science and
breaking technology. The episode Iceland Volcano Eruption was produced
by the Icelandic ProFilm production company for National Geographic, and
was shot during the Eyjafjallajökull eruption in 2010.
From the National Geographic's episode summary:
"The massive volcano eruption in Iceland is an explosion felt around the
world, grounding air traffic and causing extensive evacuations, major
flooding, and a plume of ash 30,000 feet high. With video crews on the
scene, National Geographic Channel gets an inside look at the volcano
before, during and after its recent eruption on April 14. NGC explains
the science behind the volcanic chaos as well as the reasons for the
disruption in air travel, the biggest since 9/11. Scientists say the
Eyjafjallajokull volcano is unpredictable - its already melted a glacier
- and could lead to a disturbance at the nearby Katla volcano, which is
potentially more volatile. NGC provides an in-depth report on this
major volcanic event and its global impact."
Jóhann Sigfússoon is nominated in the category for Director of
Cinematography and Gunnar Konrádsson in the category for Outstanding
Cinematography.
“I have to admit the experience is surreal and I actually didn’t believe
the news until I saw it on paper,” Konrádsson said to local newsssite
mbl.is. Producer, Anna Dís Ólafsdóttir was equally thrilled with the
nominations and told mbl.is the nomination was “a great honor for a
great team.”
